The channels arrive in seconds and every slot in the guide says "No Information". Nothing is broken. The channel list and the guide are two completely separate downloads, and the second one is slow, large and fussy about timing.
Why is the guide empty when the channels work?
Because they are different things arriving at different times. Your playlist is a list of channel names and addresses — small, quick, and enough to draw a channel list. The EPG is a separate file containing the schedule for every one of those channels, for the next seven days.
That second file is enormous by comparison. Thousands of channels multiplied by a week of programming, each entry carrying a title, a start time, an end time and a description. It arrives compressed and your player has to unpack and index the whole thing before a single slot appears.
On a Firestick — which has roughly the processing power of a mid-range phone from several years ago — that is genuinely a few minutes of work. The app looks frozen. It is not. It is grinding through a very large file with very little CPU.
How do you force an EPG update?
Every player hides this in a slightly different place, and knowing where saves a lot of guessing. Do this once, wait, and check again rather than repeating it.
TiviMate
- Settings → Playlists → select your playlist → EPG.
- Choose "Update EPG" and let it run to completion without touching anything.
- While you are there, set the update interval to every 6 hours. Every hour hammers the box for no benefit.
- If it fails repeatedly, remove the playlist and re-add it — but only after you have waited properly once.
IPTV Smarters
- Settings → EPG → choose the built-in Xtream EPG rather than an external XMLTV source.
- Select the option to reload or refresh the EPG.
- If you logged in with an M3U link, switch to the Xtream login instead. The guide handling is meaningfully better.
SS IPTV on Samsung or LG
There is not much to force here, and that is worth knowing before you spend an evening on it. SS IPTV's EPG handling is the weakest of any player people commonly use. Give it ten minutes on first load. If it stays empty, the honest answer is that the app is the limitation.
The guide loaded but everything is at the wrong time
That is a time-zone offset, and it is a setting rather than a fault. The EPG carries times in a reference zone, and your player converts them for you. When the conversion is wrong, every programme is shifted by a consistent number of hours.
The tell is the consistency. If everything is exactly one hour out, that is almost always daylight saving. If everything is five hours out, your device time zone is wrong. If the offset is random per channel, it is not a time-zone problem at all — it is a mapping problem, which is ours to fix.
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Guide totally empty, new setup | Still downloading | Wait 5 minutes. Do not reinstall. |
| Empty after a long wait | Stale cache or failed download | Force an update; then re-add the playlist |
| Everything exactly 1 hour out | Daylight saving | Check the device clock and TZ |
| Everything several hours out | Wrong device time zone | Set the device time zone correctly |
| Some channels only | EPG mapping for those feeds | Report the channel names to support |
| Right programmes, wrong channels | Mismatched external source | Switch to the built-in EPG |
Why do some channels never get a guide?
Because the guide has to be matched to the channel, and matching is not automatic. Every channel in the EPG has an ID, every channel in the playlist claims an ID, and the guide appears only when those agree.
For flagship channels this is straightforward and works reliably. For the long tail — regional affiliates, obscure international feeds, event-only channels — the schedule data may not exist anywhere in a usable form. Nobody is publishing structured programme data for every regional feed on the planet.
Two honest consequences follow. First, a small number of channels having no guide is normal on any provider, and any service claiming perfect EPG coverage across twenty thousand channels is overselling. Second, when a channel you actually watch has no guide, tell us the exact name — that is a fixable mapping job, and the exact name is what makes it fixable.
Should you use an external EPG source?
Usually not, and it is the change people make that most often makes things worse. Enthusiast forums recommend pointing your player at a third-party XMLTV URL. It solves a problem you probably do not have and creates several you did not.
The failure mode is specific and maddening: the external source uses different channel IDs to your playlist, so the guide populates confidently with the wrong programmes on the wrong channels. That is worse than blank, because blank is honest.
The exception is Enigma2, where EPGImport is the established route and worth setting up properly. Schedule it overnight so it never competes with viewing. Everywhere else, use the EPG that came with your line.
How long should the EPG take to load?
A few minutes on first load, longer on slow hardware like an older Firestick. If it is still empty after ten minutes on a fresh install, force an update. If that fails too, remove and re-add the playlist.
Why does the guide disappear after a few days?
The EPG expires and needs refreshing. Most players do this automatically on a schedule — in TiviMate, check that the update interval is set to something sane like every 6 hours rather than disabled.
Does a missing guide mean my subscription has a problem?
No. Channels playing means the line is working. The guide is a separate download, and its absence is an EPG issue rather than a subscription one. The two fail independently.
Can I get catch-up without the guide?
Not usefully. Catch-up works by letting you select a programme that has already aired, which means the player needs the schedule to know what aired and when. No EPG, no rewind.
Which player has the best guide?
TiviMate, by a distance, on Android TV and Fire TV. IPTV Smarters is solid and runs everywhere. SS IPTV on Samsung and LG is the weakest — if the guide matters to you, that is a genuine reason to add a cheap streaming stick.
The short version
Load your line, then wait five minutes before deciding anything is wrong. Force one update if it is still blank. Check your device time zone if the times look shifted. And resist the external XMLTV source that a forum recommended — it usually trades a blank guide for a confidently wrong one.
If a channel you actually watch has no guide after all that, send us the exact name on +1 (347) 676-4880. Mapping is fixable, and it is our job rather than yours.
Still not sorted?
Send us a photo of your screen on WhatsApp and tell us the device. Someone is on shift right now, and most of these are fixed inside ten minutes.
